Papers of Robert Rich, Earl of Warwick 1607-1624.

The letters and documents in the collection were assembled or copied by Warwick and his cousin Nathaniel Rich [d. 1636] as evidence against the mismanagement of affairs in Virginia by the Virginia Company. The majority of the collection consists of petitions, inquiries, charges and counter-charges. Several items deal with the Richs' interests in Bermuda. Of special note is a copy of A true relation of the state of Virginia left by Sir Thomas Dale, Bt. in May last 1616 with holograph notes by John Rolfe. Topics of interest include living conditions in the colony, relations with the Indians especially after the great massacre of 1622, the tobacco business, and the introduction of slavery. Among the correspondents are Peter Arundell, John Bargrave, William Capps, John Ferrar, John Grimsditch, Thomas Grimsditch, Sir Walter Raleigh, George Sandys, Sir Miles Sandys, Sir Samuel Sandys, Sir Samuel Wrote, Sir Thomas Smith, George Weymouth, Dr. Thomas Winston, and Sir John Zouche.
